With its back against the wall down by 10 going into the fourth quarter, the Lake Region State College women's basketball team turned it around Thursday evening on the road. A 28-performance in the fourth period and strong play in overtime led the Royals to a valuable conference win in Bismarck.
The road team fought past United Tribes Technical College earning a 91-85 victory.
With the win, Lake Region State College improves to 12-7 on the season and 2-3 in Mon-Dak Conference play.
The Lady Royals led 20-13 after on period and 37-33 at the half. UTTC took control in the third with a 61-51 lead going into the fourth.
Emily Schaefer had another monster night for the Royals. The freshman added 25 points and nine rebounds. Cassidy Nelson was consistent as usual racking up 22 points and 14 rebounds. High school teammates Mackenzie Irwin and Helen Schuster each finished with 11 points in the victory for LRSC. Jillian Hanson, Jadyn Fee and Mer Gach chipped in with six points apiece. Mikayla Wallace and Ella Gobald rounded out the scoring with two points each.
Head coach Danny Mertens noted that the team found a way to win when it mattered the most.
"Fought through some tough adversity," the coach said. "Again, the coaching staff is trying to get the players to buy into the process. Finally, after being down to start the fourth, they bought in and played the way I wanted. A win is a win and it's nice to pick up a road victory in the conference."
