Royal comeback falls just short

The Lake Region State College women's basketball team tried to claw its way back from a tough start Monday evening on the road. LRSC put together a valiant comeback and had opportunities to tie the game late. However, Dawson Community College ultimately wrapped up the 96-91 victory.
Dawson came out with a bang scoring quickly in the first period. The Buccaneers led 32-18 going into the second. From there, the Royals slowly chipped away at the deficit. DCC led 54-45 at the half.
It continued to be a fast-paced contest in the third as both teams scored their fair share of points. The Buccaneers led 76-66 going into the final period.
LRSC made a nice run at it the fourth. A two-point shot by Helen Schuster, three by Mikayla Wallace and Cassidy Nelson free throws cut the Royals' deficit to just three points in the final minute.
The Buccaneers were able to close out the 96-91 win.
Cassidy Nelson had a gigantic night for the Lady Royals. She finished with 35 points and six rebounds. Mackenzie Irwin added 15 points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists while Jillian Hanson had 14 points and seven assists. Emily Schafer also hit double figures with 10 points. Helen Schuster chipped in with six points. Jadyn Fee added four points while Mikayla Wallace had three. R'rionna Brocks and Ella Gobald added two points each.
LRSC drops to 10-6.
The Royals continue its action on the road Thursday evening in Wahpeton against NDSCS.
