Regner Powers Royals to an Inaugural Royals Weekend Sweep
Royals Hockey Sweep Inaugural Weekend.
ALBERT LEA, MN - The Royals Men’s Hockey team hit the ice this weekend in their first set of regular season games when they visited Waldorf University.
On Saturday night, playing on the road, the Royals outshot the Warriors 49-29. After continuous pressure and physical play, the Royals came out on top of the Warriors 3-1, grabbing their first win in program history.
The Royals struck first, late in the 1st period when freshmen Alex Gellner scored the lone goal of the period and erupting the Royals bench with the first goal in program history. Brody Steinmetz and Tyler Kleinjan notched assists on the goal. The Royals and Warriors shared their blows in the 2nd period resulting in a scoreless period. Early into the 3rd period freshmen Owen Vanrobaeys found the back of the net for the 2nd goal of the game and his first of the year. Darby Olson and Kaleb Hodny assisted the goal. Late in the 3rd, captain Matthew Besse found his first of the year while receiving help from Brady Wicklund.
Logan Hendrickson got the start for the Royals stopping 28 of 29 shots, earing his first win of his college career!
Sunday afternoon was a battle between the Royals and Warriors. In a back-and-forth battle, but the Royals struck first when Brady Regner found the back of the net on a nice backhand shot, netting his first of the year and his college career. Assists were credited to Owen Vanrobaeys and Darby Olson. The Warriors responded quickly with their own goal during a mess in front of the net. Tyler Kleinjan got the scoring started in the 2nd when he found the back of the net to get his first college goal with the help from Steinmetz and Regner. The Warriors again responded quickly with their own. The 3rd period was scoreless setting up a 3 on 3, 5-minute overtime. A minute and 35 seconds into overtime, Brady Regner found his 2nd goal of the game to finish off the Royal’s Weekend Sweep!
The home opener is slated for October 13th when the Women’s team has puck drop at 5:40 and Men’s to follow at 8:00 pm and the Burdick Arena! See you all there! #RoyalsHockey
