Lake Region State College volleyball took a demanding 2-0 match lead over Dakota College at Bottineau Wednesday night from the Sports Center. The last time that happened at home, the victory escaped them like an Houdini act.
The Royals had a stronger straitjacket this time.
LRSC defeated the Lumberjacks 3-1, outscoring DCB 75-46 in the three set wins. The Royals are 4-1 in September.
"I feel good (about the win)," said Royals head coach Brigitte Greywater.
The Royals (7-6, 2-1 Mon-Dak) needed an extra set to close out DCB after allowing the Lumberjacks to break through in the third set. DCB took its first lead of the entire match in set No. 3, when it went up 4-3. They increased their advantage to four but the Royals came back. An ace by Jexley Porrata gave LRSC the lead at 18-17 and after her next serve went long to tie the score at 18, a Maara Nelson kill and an ace by Precious Rawlins put the Royals up two.
However, a kill by Amy Stolz put the Lumberjacks (1-7, 0-2) ahead 21-20 were they were able to hold on to win the set 25-22.
"We got a little shaky at times and we missed a lot of serves that set," Greywater said. "And I think missed serves was the difference between winning and losing that set."
The Royals won the first set 25-14 after scoring the match's first seven points. DCB never got within four. In the second set, the Lumberjacks got within one at 4-3 but a Nelson kill was the first of five straight points for the Royals who won set No. 2 25-14.
LRSC ended the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.
Nelson had nine kills and 22 digs, Elizabeth Lucy has nine kills and three blocks, Annie Jorgenson had 11 kills and Rachel Hill had 35 assists and three aces to pace the Royals.
