Benjamin E. Mays is quoted as saying in part, "The tragedy of life is often not in our failure, but rather in our complacency. Not in our doing too much, but rather in our doing too little."
Those moments are the difference between winning and losing — Lake Region State College volleyball learned that in gut wrenching fashion.
The Royals fell to Bismarck State College in a five-set Mon-Dak match Wednesday night from the Sports Center. A match that appeared to be over at the two-set intermission.
"We settled for a goal, and by settling we didn't come back to compete," said Royals head coach Brigitte Greywater.
LRSC (3-3, 0-1) went into the break ahead 2-0 over the Mystics, after dominating the first two sets. They overcame a three point deficit early in the first set and never trailed again during that stretch, even at one time having an eight point advantage to open the second set and led by seven twice at 11-4 and 12-5 respectively. The Royals won the first two sets 25-19 and 25-20.
"We did a lot of things well in the first two sets and we made that a goal. And to win two sets we made that a goal because we just played them (Bismarck) Saturday and only won one set so we decided that we were going to win two and we did that," Greywater said.
Then complacency kicked in.
"We thought we could coast, and there's no coasting."
The Royals began the third set by taking a 5-1 lead but allowed Bismarck State College to get back into it after Erin Jorgenson hit the ball into the net that gave the Mystics the point to tie the set at 5. BSC took the lead at 11-10 after its outside hitter Leah Woods scored a point off a block. The Mystics would run away with the set 25-17.
LRSC had the chance to close the match, after a Annie Jorgenson kill tied the fourth set at 20-all and serving. But the Mystics outscored the Royals 5-1 from that point forward to win the set.
BSC (5-0, 1-0) walked away from the Royals in the fifth set, winning 15-8.
"You have to continue to be relentless. The person who is relentless just goes and goes and goes, and they just don't get off your back. They're in your face. That's the team we need to become," Greywater said.
Maara Nelson had 16 kills and 17 digs, Rachel Hill had 41 assists and two aces and Fabianne Besosa had 17 digs and two aces to pace the Royals.
