The Lake Region State College Royals Volleyball team traveled to Bismarck, ND to take on the Bismarck State College Mystics last night. The Mystics are the defending MonDak conference champions and the Royals knew it would be no easy trip.
The first set was a set of runs. BSC came out swinging and took an early 8-2 lead forcing an LRSC time out. The Royals regrouped and came out cutting the lead to 10-8. That run by the Royals was quickly stopped and the Mystics made one of their own stretching the lead to 16-9. LRSC took a timeout and despite their best efforts they couldn't finish the comeback. The Mystics took the first set win 25-19.
During the second set the Royals were plagued by service errors that the Mystics took advantage of. They swept through the first set and got the win 25-12. LRSC wouldn't go down without a fight. During the 10 minute intermission the Royals dug deep and came out ready to go. They jumped out to an early lead and halfway through held on to that with a score of 14-13. The Mystics wouldn't relent and made a run of their own forcing two Royals timeouts with the score 20-17 & 23-18. LRSC had one good run left in them and they cut the BSC lead to 23-22 but couldn't finish the comeback. Mystics finished out the third set 25-22.
Head Coach Brigitte Greywater said, "I was inspired by our leaders last night, they stepped up and pushed others to step up. That was the change in our third set. We have taken a step in the right direction this week."
It was another solid night for Hannah Hextall as she continues to lead the Royals. She had 7 kills, 3 aces, and 12 digs. Payton Kritzberger added 7 kills and 3 blocks with Evan Stack leading the way with 17 digs. Hannah Swartz had a big night with 22 assists and chipped in 3 blocks.
