The Lake Region State College Royals Volleyball team traveled to Norfolk, NE this past weekend to participate in the Northeast Volleyball. It was a tough weekend for the Royals as they were up against stiff competition.
The tournament started Friday night for the Royals against the host team Northeast. The match was plagued by inconsistencies and errors that made it difficult for the Royals to get in any sort of rhythm. The Hawks won in 3 straight sets 16-25, 11-25 & 15-25.
The second match Friday night for the Royals was against the #8 team in the nation Kirkwood. Kirkwood came out firing from the get go playing like the #8 team. The quick starts of each set was difficult for the Royals to overcome and they lost in straight sets 10-25, 12-25 & 8-25.
Head Coach Brigitte Greywater commented about day 1, "We struggled to receive today but overall we were fine. We need to control serve receive to get where we need to be. We will learn from our mistakes and we know we need to show up for each and every game."
Day 2 of the tournament was much better. They started out the morning against Iowa Lakes shaking off the errors from the night before and winning the first set 25-21. Iowa Lakes didn't stay down for long the next two sets were as close as could be with both teams wanting the win. Iowa Lakes won 23-25 and 22-25 to set up a fourth set which they also won 15-25.
Southeast was the opponent for the last match of the tournament. Southeast won the first set 14-25 the Royals came back and won the second set 25-21 to tie it up at 1-1. The next two sets were tough and contested by both sides with multiple lead changes. The Royals came up short however, with Southeast taking the final two sets by the same score 19-25.
Coach Greywater commented about day 2, "We had a stronger start today, we just need to figure out how to finish. Our serve receive problems that we had trouble with yesterday were better today. I really want to see us focus on putting the ball away in our upcoming matches and put the entire game together."
