The Lake Region State College Lady Royals basketball team traveled to Phoenix Arizona for three games over the holiday break.
Game one had the Lady Royals matched up against South Mountain CC. The game was thoroughly controlled by LRSC from start to finish. They would win 92-58 starting off the trip right with a win.
The second game proved to be much tougher for Lake Region. They would take on #2 South Plains CC and push them to the limits. Throughout the game the Lady Royals would cut the lead to six or eight points on multiple occasions but every time they would pull close the Texans would pull away. The final 60-47 in favor of South Plains.
The third game was against the host team Phoenix College. Despite some tired legs with their third game in three days, the Lady Royals would prevail. With a 64-52 win, LRSC would return to North Dakota with a 2-1 record on the weekend and 10-7 record on the year.
Head Coach Danny Mertens said after the weekend, "I am extremely proud of the way we played this week. This has been some of our best basketball of the year. Grabbing two wins on the road and holding the number two ranked team to thirty plus points less than they are use to scoring are some big take aways from the weekend. We finally started knocking down some shots as a team but our defense has really picked up as of late. That is going to carry us during those dog days of the conference season."
Next up is the conference opener at home versus Dakota College at Bottineau, 6:30pm on Wednesday the 8th.
