Strong Second Half Leads to Victory for Lady Royals
The Lake Region State College Lady Royals basketball team traveled to Bottineau, ND to take on MonDak Conference opponent Dakota College at Bottineau.
The Lake Region State College Lady Royals basketball team traveled to Bottineau, ND to take on MonDak Conference opponent Dakota College at Bottineau. Entering the game LRSC was 14-9 (3-2) while DCB was 7-14 (2-3).
Coming into the game the Lady Royals were hoping for a quick start and they got one. LRSC began the game on a 9-2 run forcing a Jacks timeout. The run continued as Lake Region scored 20 first quarter points to lead 20-13 at the first break. The momentum would not continue in the second quarter, as DCB matched shot for shot with LRSC. With the lead down to 6 and only a few seconds left on the clock Maara Nelson drained a three as time expired to give LRSC a 36-27 lead heading into the break. Coming out of halftime it was all Lady Royals. They racked up 26 third quarter points, while limiting the Jacks to 9 to bust the game wide open. The tough nosed defense would continue in the fourth, Lake Region would hold DCB to single digits once again scoring only 7 points. The final score Lake Region 79 Dakota College at Bottineau 43. The Lady Royals were paced by their big 3, Maara Nelson & Annie Jorgenson both had 15 points, Emily Schaefer had 14 points and R'rionna Brocks dished out 5 assists to go with her 4 points and 4 steals.
Head Coach Danny Mertens said after the game, "I was happy with how we closed out that game. We were inconsistent in the first half but really did well in the second holding them to only 16 total points. I thought we did a good job of sharing the ball and taking care of it tonight, we had 18 assists to go with only 8 turnovers. We can win a lot of games doing that."
With the win the Lady Royals move to 15-9 (4-2) on the season. They will be back in action Thursday night in Bismarck, ND against Bismarck State College.
