The Lake Region State College Lady Royals basketball team hosted a MonDak Conference game on Sunday versus Dawson Community College Buccaneers.
The Lake Region State College Lady Royals basketball team hosted a MonDak Conference game on Sunday versus Dawson Community College Buccaneers. LRSC came into the game with a 13-7 (2-0), while DCC was 11-8 (1-1).
The game would turn into a high scoring affair with the Lady Royals taking a 9-point first half lead at 47-38. In the 3rd quarter both teams would light up the scoreboard, LRSC would score 25 and Dawson would score 28 to cut into the Royals lead. The 4th quarter would see Dawson continue to score the ball at a high level and Lake Region go cold. The Buccaneers would score 26 4th quarter points to the Lady Royals 13 to take the lead and the game 92-85. Dawson's 54-second half points, 50% shooting from the field and 45% shooting from three would sink the Royals in this Conference matchup. Big games from Maara Nelson 22 points, 8 assists, Annie Jorgenson 21 points 8 rebounds and Shay'Lee Dayman 16 points 9 rebounds would not be enough for the Lady Royals to overcome a hot shooting DCC squad.
Head Coach Danny Mertens said after the game, "It's simple, we didn't get stops tonight. We scored 85 points and that should have been more than enough. As a team, we have to do a better job on the defensive end and take ownership. After playing some of our best defense over Christmas and coming out of break, I thought we took a step back tonight. Big games from Maara & Annie helped out and Shay'Lee is continuing to play very strong for us."
With the loss the Lady Royals are now 13-8 (2-1) on the season. They will be back in action at home vs. NDSCS Wednesday night 6:30pm at the sportscenter.
