The Lake Region State College women's basketball team took their 3-0 record into Friday night's game against the Jamestown JV Jimmies, the first of three games in three days for the Royals in the Holiday Inn Classic at the DL Sports Center.
The Royals were able to stifle Jamestown, holding them to 10 points in the first quarter on the way to a 71-53 win. The Jimmies had no answer for the Royals' inside game and had trouble scoring all night.
Though he was happy with the success the Royals had containing the Jamestown offensive attack, head coach Danny Mertens says that his team needs to pick it up offensively.
"I thought we did some pretty good things defensively," Mertens said.
"Offensively we have our moments where things have stalled."
Though the offense had somewhat of an off shooting night - they shot 39 percent from the field and 24 percent from 3-point range - they also forced 41 turnovers.
However, they lost the battle of the boards 47-30. Mertens pointed out that the problem wasn't energy, as the Royals were able to keep the
Jimmies off balance throughout the game.
"We got beat on the boards tonight, but we got after some loose balls and knocked down some shots early," Mertens said.
Freshman guard Emily Schafer led the team in scoring with 15 points, while sophomore center Cassidy Nelson had 14 points and six rebounds.
All but two players scored against the Jimmies, as Mertens rotated players often in order to help weather the three day schedule.
"Everyone got into the game, got some minutes," Mertens said. "It wasa good learning experience."
Courtney Mosloski led the Jimmies in scoring, putting up 18 points and nine rebounds.
