The Royal Softball team is in Phoenix AZ playing several games over the next week.
Friday March 11th found the team playing 3 quality NJCAA Division 1 schools.
In the first game, the Royals played Midland College, losing 10-0. Midland's pitcher, Sandie Nakota, pitched a complete game, 5 inning no hitter striking out 1 and giving up only one walk. For the Royals, Hanna Gary and Kassi Jones pitched combining for the 10 runs on 12 hits.
The second game of the day was against Yavapai College losing 8-0. The Royals had 3 hits, one by Courtney Fines, and two by Hanna Gary. Alaina McKinnon and Hannah Hextall pitched combining for the 8 runs on 7 hits with 6 walks.
The third game against Central Arizona College found the Royals coming up short after a spirited effort. The final score ending up 19-7. In the game, Courtney Fines hit her first career home run in dramatic fashion nailing a grand slam in the second inning. The Royals struggled in the third inning with allowing 14 batters to the plate. Courtney Fines had a home run and a single in the game, Hanna Gary, Rebekah Stoe, Jade Ledochowski, Kiahna Chumola, Jaimie Shaw, and Haunani Morton each had singles.Mackenzie Sansom and Rebekah Stoe pitched the game giving up the 19 runs, on 12 hits, and 8 walks.
Saturday March 12th wasn't any easier for the Royals when they played another 3 games, 2 of which were against Nationally ranked opponents. Arizona Western College, nationally ranked #12 in Division I, no hit the Royals and scored 26 runs in the process. Jen Flare pitched 5 hit less innings, striking out 10, and walking only 1. Alaina McKinnon, Hannah Hextall, and Mackenzie Sansom pitched for the Royals giving up 22 hits, 5 walks, and 2 home runs.
In the second game of the day against South Mountain Community College, the Royals had a strong pitching performance from Hanna Gary but couldn't get the timely hit to score more runs and committing 4 errors, losing 9-2. Courtney Fines lead off the game with a solo home run on the first pitch of the game. Emma Gary scored later in the inning after Jade Ledochowski grounded out allowing her to score. For the game, the Royals had 4 hits from Courtney Fines 2, Hanna Gary and Jaimie Shaw's one each. Hanna Gary finished the complete game pitching the 7 innings giving up 9 hits, 9 runs, 2 earned runs, 3 home runs, 3 strike outs, and 5 walks.
The final game on Saturday was against the NJCAA Division 2 nationally ranked #6 Pima Community College. The Royals were no hit for the third time in two days by Pima's Odalis Orduno. She struck out 7 and did not walk a batter. Rebekah Stoe pitched the game giving up the 11 runs off of 10 hits, walking 4.
The Royals next action will be a double header on Monday against South Mountain Community College then Tuesday against Glendale Community College.
