On Sunday, the Lake Region State College Royals Basketball team traveled to Bismarck, ND to take on the United Tribes Technical College Thunderbirds. Coming into the game, LRSC was 17-11 (5-5) while UTTC was 19-9 (4-6).
In the first half of the game, United Tribes would come out swinging. They would use a three-point barrage and buckets in transition to take a 51-36 lead going into the half. The Royals would use the half time to re-group and re-focus, mainly on the defensive end. They came out and began the task of chipping away at the Thunderbirds 15 point lead. Slowly, the UTTC lead began to dwindle until the Royals would take their first lead of the game with 4 minutes to go 70-69. A pair of Jordan Lynn free throws would seal the game for LRSC 81-77. Lamarr Wood would lead the Royals with 16 points and 9 rebounds, Nik Fassos had 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Head Coach Jared Marshall would say after the game, "This was a gutsy effort by this team. To be down 15 at the half and then come back to win is no easy task. We really stepped up defensively in the second and held them to 26 points. We had a big time effort from our bench tonight, James Streeter had 9 points, Kyle Henningsgard 10 points, Jake Hanson 5 points and Harry Reemst did an amazing job defensively. These guys stayed ready and gave us great minutes tonight."
With the win Lake Region moves to 18-11 (6-5) on the year. Their final home game of the regular season will be Wednesday night vs. Dakota College at Bottineau 8:30pm at the sportscenter. With a loss from Williston State, the Royals have clinched the 3 seed in the Region XIII tournament and a first round bye for the second straight year.
