The Lake Region State College Lady Royals Volleyball team traveled across the border to Canada to play four matches in two days.
The weekend would end up being a microcosm of their season as a whole. LRSC fought through the highs, the lows, wins and losses and came out of it, a better team in the end heading into the final part of their season.
First up was a match against St. Boniface to start the weekend. The Royals were in complete control through the first two sets but they faltered in the third giving up a set. However, the low would be short lived as they would dominate the fourth and final set to take the match 3-1. Next up for LRSC was Canadian Mennonite. They Lady Royals would battle back early in the first set to take the lead. In the second set though, they dug themselves too big of a hole to get out of. Canadian Mennonite would continue the momentum and take the third set. It would take a gutsy effort in the fourth and fifth set from the Lady Royals to battle back but that is exactly what they gave. It paid off, as they would win the match in five, 3-2.
On day two, the wear and tear of a long season seemed to be weighing down the Lady Royals. They would do their best to combat this in the first game against the host team Providence. Despite trailing most of the match, LRSC would push it to the limits forcing a fifth set. The valiant comeback was not meant to be as they would fall in the fifth set and lose the match 3-2. In the fourth and final game of the weekend Red River was just too much for the Royals all around. During the match, LRSC would struggle to find consistency. They would fall in straight sets 3-0 to Red River.
After the weekend Head Coach Brigitte Greywater would say, "While we were not perfect this weekend and obviously did not get the outcome we wanted in every match, I thought we did some good things. Coming off two big wins this past week, I thought we responded well when we could have had a let down. This is the tough part of the season where the girls are battling physical and mental fatigue. I have complete faith that we will respond to the challenge in front of us and finish out our final six regular season games on a high note."
Following the weekend the Lady Royals are now 19-11 (7-3). This will be a big week for LRSC as they will play 6 games in 7 days, highlighted by a home conference match against #18 NDSCS. Then on Friday and Saturday they will play host to the Sleep Inn Slamfest. Friday, they will take on Northland and CMU. Saturday, LRSC will be matched up against Central Lakes and Providence. Then, the following Monday they will finish up the regular season in Bottineau, taking on DCB.
