Royals Snag Three Wins During Big Weekend
The Lake Region State College Royals Volleyball team had a big weekend of action. They played a total of 5 games in three days coming out with a 3 and 2 overall record.
It started on Friday night when LRSC squared off in a MonDak match against Dawson Community College. In the previous matchup the Buccanners bested the Royals in 3 sets. Slow starts had plagued the Royals all season but tonight that wasn't the case, they jumped out to early leads in the first 2 sets. However, a combination of late rallies by the Bucs and serve errors did them in. DCC took the first set 25-21 & the second set 25-22. Late in the third set a 4-0 run by the Royals with game point on the line fell just short as the Bucs closed it out 25-22. They won the match 3-0 over LRSC.
On Saturday the Royals hosted the 10 team 3rd annual Sleep Inn Slamfest. LRSC was matched up against Providence in their first game. The Providence team proved to be too much for the Royals as they took set 1 25-12, set 2 25-22 & set 3 25-21.
Game two had LRSC squaring off against Red River. It was a determined Royals squad that took the court. In the first set they jumped all over Red River with an early 16-9 lead and never looked back. They closed out the set 25-21. Set two was a back and forth match with neither team giving an inch. The Royals ended up prevailing and taking the set 25-23. The third set was all Lake Region, the squad was hungry to close the match out and they did. Taking the match 3-0.
On Sunday the LRSC led off the day versus Assiniboine. They carried over the momentum from the previous days win to take the first set 25-18. The second set of the match proved to be one of if not the most exciting sets the Royals had played all year. The set lasted half an hour, both teams ran out of subs and combined to score 68 points! The Royals came out victorious winning the hard fought match 35-33. Both teams continued to battle in a tightly contested third set. LRSC would take it in the end 25-23 and win the match 3-0 earning their second win of the weekend.
The fifth and final game of the weekend for the Royals had LRSC matched up against Oak Hills. Riding the momentum of a two game win streak the Royals cruised through the first set 25-7. The second was more of the same with LRSC handily winning 25-12. Oak Hills gave the Royals a run early in the third set but couldn't hang with them, the final Royals 25 Oak Hills 19.
Head Coach Brigitte Greywater said, "What a great weekend for us as a team. We limited our mistakes, fought through some adversity and played some of our best volleyball of the year over these past 3 days. I am proud of this team and how we have continued to fight to the very end. We need to carry this momentum into next week to finish out the season strong."
The Royals are now 6-25 (0-9) on the season. Heading into this week they have their final game of the regular season against MonDak opponent Williston State at home, October 18th, 7pm at the sportscenter. Then the Royals will play host to the Regional tournament which will kick off 11am on Saturday the 21st. Stay tuned for the full release of the Regional Tournament schedule.
