The LRSC volleyball team started their season this week by losing both matches against Mayville State JV on Aug. 22 and a home opener against Northland Community and Technical College on Aug. 23. Although both matches were losses, match experience from Mayville helped the Royals performance against Northland.
"A ton of improvement than against Mayville," Royals Head Coach Brigette Greywater said after playing the Northland Pioneers. "I would compare Mayville to this team that we saw and I think we played a lot better today."
The Royals lost the first two sets with scores of 25-16 and 25-18 but started to heat up in the third. "I think controlling service is important and we didn't control it in the first two sets," Greywater said. "I think what you saw (in the third set) is controlling service and we were passing above a two. When you are passing above a two, you are getting more kills and your center doesn't have to work so hard. We didn't pass well at all to start out and we just struggled."
After the past two matches, the Royals have some areas to work on. "We talked in the locker room about committing to defense," Greywater said. "I think that right now we are so excited to get a kill that we are not committing to defense. Once we start committing to defense then we are going to see more kills but because we are at the wrong place, at the wrong time and we forget to transition. We talked about that a lot in the locker room and it's coming."
"The girls are excited to go back to practice and work on what we need to work on so there was a lot of positive conversation in the locker room."
Northland Community College had good teamwork and solid play that led to victory for the night.
"Overall it looks like the whole team did a fantastic job," Northland Head Coach Abdul Chamma said. "Playing against [the Royals], [with] their record last year; when you look at their record especially with Coach Brigette you kind of have to worry about (them). Coming to a different territory this year you have to prepare your team that they need to do whatever it takes. They cannot underestimate any team and they cannot overestimate any team."
