The NJCAA Women's Basketball Coaches Association has announced the names of 50 student-athletes who have been selected as 2020 NJCAA Women's Basketball All-Star members.
For the sixth straight season the LRSC Women's Basketball team has had a player represented on the team. This year, sophomore guard from Prospect, IL, Kayla Byrne has been honored.
Per the NJCAA's release, "With the ongoing presence of COVID-19, what would have been the 13th annual NJCAA Women's Basketball Coaches Association All-Star event is unable to transpire, nonetheless the All-Star list is stacked with talent." They continued, "On behalf of the NJCAA Women's Basketball Coaches Association, we would like to congratulate the 2020 NJCAA WBB CA All Star. It deeply saddens us that we will not be able to honor these participants this year at our annual event which was cancelled in April due to COVID-19 concerns. They have worked very hard during their freshman year to be selected to represent their institutions, their regions, and the NJCAA. However, this is still a great honor and we will do our best to promote these deserving student-athletes."
During her freshman season for the Royals, she averaged 12.9ppg 3.4rpg 1.4apg while shooting 34% from the field and 33% from behind the arc.
Head Coach Danny Mertens had this to say about Kayla, "This is an amazing honor for Kayla. I am excited that she has been recognized for the the things she accomplished during her freshman season. She is well deserving of this honor. It is disappointing she won't be able to compete on the floor against the other All-Stars but this is a great start to her sophomore year. We expect her to continue to be an offensive threat and to grow into more of a leader."
Kayla joins Kennedy Henningsgard (2015), Cassidy Nelson (2016), Emily Schaefer (2017), Maara Nelson (2018), Maggie Gilbert (2018) and Steph Miller (2019) as Lady Royals who have been named NJCAA All-Stars.
