The Lake Region State College Lady Royals basketball team hosted Dakota College at Bottineau on Wednesday night at the sportscenter to open up MonDak Conference play.
LRSC would open up an early lead and take it into half time up by seven. They would do their best to pull away in the third extending the lead to double digits for the first time all game. However, DCB would not go away. They would cut the lead to five points, but a pair of back to back buckets with less than two minutes gave them breathing room. A handful of Kayla Byrne free throws down the stretch would be the final nail in the coffin. She would go 10-11 on the game and the Royals would go 19-21 as a team. Kayla would lead the Royals with 18 points.
Head Coach Danny Mertens said after the game, "You always love to start off conference season with a win. It wasn't our best overall game, our intensity wasn't anywhere close to where it needed to be. We found a way though, we made free throws, won the turnover and rebounding battle, those little things made the difference."
Steph Miller would chip in 8 points and have 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Jordyn Worley and Jadyn Pollert would put up 12 points each.
With the win, the Lady Royals are now 11-6 (1-0). They will travel to Glendive, MT this weekend to take on Dawson CC.
