Three Straight Wins for Lady Royals Basketball Team
They say winning on the road is never easy. If that is the case, winning a conference game on the road must be that much harder. On Thursday night, the Lady Royals Basketball team traveled to Bismarck, ND to take on MonDak Conference opponent Bismarck State College. Coming into the game it had been a few years sense LRSC had grabbed a victory at the Armory. Head Coach Danny Mertens was still looking for his first as head coach, adding just a little bit more pressure to what was already going to be a tough game. Coming into the game the Lady Royals were 15-9 (4-2) while the Mystics were 12-8 (4-2), with LRSC winning the previous matchup 71-68.
After a back and forth start to the game, LRSC used a 13-0 run to take the lead 26-19. They continued to control the half with the score heading into the break 31-26 in favor of Lake Region. Multiple times in the second half, the Lady Royals would stretch their lead to 9 but could not take it any further. Just as BSC would see the game slipping away, they would make a run of their own to close the gap. With 49 seconds to go and LRSC clinging to a 3-point lead, Bismarck brought the ball down. The Lady Royals would dig in and get a big stop. Emily Schafer would come up with the ball, be fouled, make 1 of 2 free throws to seal the Lady Royals 4 point victory over BSC. The final LRSC 56 BSC 52. Emily Schafer paced Lake Region with 21 points and 6 rebounds followed by Annie Jorgenson 13 points and 4 rebounds.
Head Coach Danny Mertens after the game would say, "It always feels good to go on the road and get a conference win but this one meant just a little bit more. I am glad we finally got this BSC road win. It was not always pretty tonight but we dug in and found a way to get it done. We need to clean up our turnovers but did a great job of turning them over 29 times. That was a key to our win."
With the victory the Lady Royals move to 16-9 (5-2) overall and are sitting tied for 2nd place in the conference with Dawson CC. They will be back in action Monday night at home versus Williston State College.
