Lady Royals Win over Northern State JV
The Lake Region State College Lady Royals Basketball team entered Sunday’s home game against Northern State College JV Wolves with an 9-4 record.
The Lake Region State College Lady Royals Basketball team entered Sunday's home game against Northern State College JV Wolves with an 8-4 record. The game proved to be a battle from start to finish for the home squad as they were constantly tested by Northern State.
The Lady Royals enjoyed one of if not their best starts of the year in this game. They jumped out to an early 16-5 lead, clicking on both ends of the floor. They were led early by Annie Jorgenson who scored 8 of her 13 points in the first quarter to give them an early 16-9 lead. Then after that, it was the Maara Nelson show. She exploded for 11 points in the second quarter and continued to rack up the points in the 3rd scoring 10 more on her way to 21 on the day. She was also disruptive on the defensive end racking up 11 steals to go with 6 rebounds on the day.
With the Royals hanging on to a 43-41 lead in the 4th. An R'rionna Brocks steal, and one helped Lake Region explode out of the break on an 11-5 run to lead 54-46. SHe would give the Lady Royals great energy off the bench on her way 8 points 2 assists and 2 steals. Wolves would try to make a run to cut the lead to 5 but three straight steals by the home team would put the game away. The final Lady Royals 61 Northern State 50.
Head Coach Danny Mertens said, "Today was absolutely the best defensive effort we have had all year. We caused 36 turnovers which is an amazing number. It gave us an extra 30 possessions that they did not have. I keep telling the girls our offense will come, we just need to focus defensively to be a great team. Today we took a step in the right direction, I am very proud of the team."
The Lady Royals move to 10-4 on the season. They will have a little bit of time off before they head to Las Vegas for 3 games in 3 days December 27th-29th.
