Lake Region State College did just that in women's basketball action Wednesday, Dec. 6. The Lady Royals used a fast start and a late surge to knock off the University of Jamestown JV by a tally of 60-50.
One major key for the road team was limiting the Jimmies offensively.
"We played very well defensively for 40 minutes which we didn't do a couple weeks ago when the beat us at home. It was great to bounce back after getting defeated by them," LRSC head women's coach Danny Mertens told the Journal.
LRSC was led by its starting backcourt trio who combined for 45 of the team's 60 points. Freshman guard Maara Nelson led the way with 17 points. Sophomore Emily Schafer chipped in with 15 points. while fellow sophomore Annie Jorgenson recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Kendall Parker and R'rionna Brocks scored four points each while Shay'Lee Dayman added three. Maggie Gilbert and Bailey Lamp rounded out the scoring with two points each.
The Royals jumped out to a quick start with an 18-12 advantage after one period of play. LRSC, who led 29-21 at the half and 38-33 after three, picked up the 60-50 win.
"We didn't shoot well, but we got lots of defensive stops," Mertens said.
LRSC improved to 9-4 with the win. The Royals play Northern State JV Sunday at 1 p.m. inside the friendly confines of the Devils Lake Sports Center.
