The Lake Region State College Women's Basketball team traveled to Wahpeton, ND this past weekend to take on Concordia JV and Leech Lake Community College. The Lady Royals entered the weekend 5-4 on the season.
First up for the Lady Royals was Concordia JV. It was a slow start for both teams as they struggled to find their grooves offensively. At the half, it was LRSC 26 Concordia 24. A big 3rd quarter from the Royals where they scored 24 points helped extend their lead over the Cobbers. The 4th quarter was back and forth with Concordia trying to close the LRSC lead. However, it seemed every time Concordia would close the gap it was Emily Schafer, 29 points 9 rebounds, or Maara Nelson, 23 points 9 rebounds that answered the call for the Lady Royals. Lake Region would overcome a tough shooting night by forcing 32 Concordia turnovers to win 70-61.
The next game for the Lady Royals was against Leech Lake Community College. It was another slow start, strong finish game for LRSC. The Lady Royal offense came alive in the second and third scoring over half of their points in those 2 quarters. Five different Royals scored in double figures with eleven different players scoring overall. LRSC rolled against Leech Lake winning 99-46. It was another solid defensive effort by Lake Region. They would force 23 turnovers and limit the Lakers to shooting 31% from the field and 14% from behind the arc. Maggie Gilbert posted another double double on the night with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Head Coach Danny Mertens said, "I was very happy with our defensive effort all weekend. We did a great job of taking the other teams out of what they wanted to do offensively. The team also did a great job winning the rebounding category both nights. We had some players who did a great job stepping up off the bench for us this past weekend, which is something we have been missing at times this year. Overall, I am very happy with where we are at as a team."
The Lady Royals are now 7-4 on the season. They will play Jamestown JV Wednesday 3pm in Jamestown and then will host their final home game of the year against Northern State JV, 1pm at the sportscenter.
