Lake Region State College Softball plays in Arizona.
March 2019 – The Lake Region State College softball team traveled to Phoenix AZ to play 6 games recently against 4 different teams- Dawson Community College, Seward Community College, South Mountain Community College, and Scottsdale Community College. The games provided the team the opportunity to be outside and in the dirt for the first time this season.
March 14, 2019 – The first game of the day was against Seward Community College out of Kansas at the Rose Mofford Sports complex in Phoenix AZ. The Royals lost the game by the score of 3 – 11. The Royals jumped out to a one run lead in the first inning after Samantha Shumway singled, Tyra Roberson sacrificed bunt moved her to second, then a single by Sadie Schilling scored her. The Royals again got on the board in the third inning when Shumway doubled and scored after Tyra Robertson singled. Robertson scored after she stole second, reached third on a passed ball, and Sadie Schilling hit a sacrifice fly to right field giving the Royals a 3 to 0 lead. Royals pitcher Madison Foss was in control for the first 3 innings but in the fourth, the game quickly turned. In the fourth inning the Seward team scored 6 runs off 6 hits, 2 were doubles and 2 were homeruns. They scored another 5 in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game by the 8 run rule. Emily Wininger came in to relieve Foss in the fifth but could not stop the Seward team. For the game, Foss pitched 4 innings, giving up 7 runs, 11 hits, 3 walks, and 3 homeruns. Wininger did not record an out and gave up 4 runs off of 6 hits and 2 walks. The team committed 2 errors in the game.
Game 2 of the day came against Mon-Dak Conference opponent Dawson Community College (DCC). The Royals came up short again losing 11-0 in 5 innings. DCC jumped out to a 5 run lead in the first off of Royals Pitcher Lexi Davis. A combination of errors, well hit balls, and walks contributed to the fast start for the Dawson team. The second inning was much the same, DCC scored another 4 runs to take a commanding 9 run lead. Overall, the Royals were only able to get 2 hits off of Dawson pitcher Shelby Martin, a double by Samantha Shumway and a triple by Sadie Schilling. Lexi Davis pitched the 5 innings for the Royals giving up 11 runs off of 10 hits, 7 walks, and 1 strike out. The team committed 4 errors in the game.
March 15, 2019 – The games today were against South Mountain Community College. The Royals put together a better performance today. In the first game, the Royals started well but just couldn't find a way to score losing 10 to 1. The Cougars from South Mountain on the other hand, scored 2 runs in the first, 3 runs in the second and 2 runs in the third off of pitcher Tehani Yamamoto to take a 7 run lead. The Royals only run came after Precious Rawlins walked, stole second, then scored on a hit from Sadie Schilling. The game ended due to the 8 run rule in the 5th inning after South Mountain score 3 more runs in the bottom of the4th inning off of Yamamoto. Lexi Davis came in relief and was able to get the Royals out of the inning. For the game, the Royals were only able to get 2 hits off of the South Mountain pitcher, Kendall Schwartz. Yamamoto pitched 3 innings giving up 8 hits, 10 runs, and 3 walks. Davis pitched 1 inning giving up no hits, no runs, and 1 walk.
In the second game, the Royals starting pitcher Lexi Davis continued a strong performance from the end of the first game. She held the Cougars from South Mountain scoreless the first two innings but in the third they scored 2 runs. The Royals were able to score 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning, Lexi Davis started the inning with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice from Samantha Shumway. Tyra Robertson followed with a solo homerun to give the Royals a brief lead but the Cougars responded by scoring 2 runs off of 2 doubles and a single. South Mountain then scored 3 runs in both the 4th inning and 5th innings giving them an 8 to 2 lead. The Royals were able to score one run in the top of the 7th but were unable to get any closer and the game ended by the score of 3 to 8. For the game, the Royals had 6 hits. One each from Samantha Shumway, Tyra Robertson, Emily Wininger, Alysha Moser, Tehani Yamamoto, and Lexi Davis. Lexi Davis completed the game giving up 8 runs off of 9 hits, striking out 2, and walking 8.
March 16, 2019 – The Royals softball team played Scottsdale Community College (SCC) today. In the first game the Artichokes from SCC won by the score of 12-4 in 6 innings. The Royals were plagued with untimely errors in the field and missed opportunities when at the plate. Royals pitcher Madison Foss took the loss pitching 5 and two-thirds innings giving up 12 runs, 7 earned runs, off of 13 hits and 1 walk. The Royals however had 8 errors in the game. At the plate, the Royals were led by Samantha Shumway with 2 hits, Sadie Schilling, Tehani Yamamoto, Alysha Moser, and Madison Foss with one hit apiece.
In the second game, the Royals were unable to get on track but pitcher Tehani Yamamoto worked hard to keep them in the game. She pitched the entire game and scored the only run hitting a solo homerun in the 4th inning. The Royals only had 3 hits but all were extra base hits. Doubles by Samantha Shumway and Emily Wininger along with Yamamoto's homerun were the only bright spots for the team at the plate. In the field, the Royals were again plagued with the error bug, committing 7 errors in the game. Yamamoto pitched 6 innings, surrendering 6 hits, walking 3 and striking out one.
The softball team will travel next to the Minneapolis area March 22nd to the 25th for games.
