The Lake Region State College softball team headed to Rochester MN today to play 3 games in the Rochester Community and Technical College sports bubble.
The Royals won one and lost two but gave the team another opportunity to assess where their strengths are and areas where they can improve.
In game 1, the Royals took on Gogebic Community College and won by the score of 16-0. In the first inning, the Royals were able to score one run when Emily Wininger walked with the bases loaded scoring Samantha Shumway. In the second inning, the team from Lake Region erupted scoring 8 runs after sending 11 batters to the plate. The Royals scored 7 again in the 3rd inning to take a 16 run lead they would not relinquish. For the game, the Royals got a strong performance from pitcher Lexi Davis where she struck out 9 batters with only 1 hit in the 5 innings pitched. Also, Samantha Shumway went 3 for 3 at the plate scoring 3 runs and had 5 runs batted in (RBI). Sadie Schilling and Alysha Moser also had a good game at the plate. Schilling had a double, scored twice and had an RBI. Moser had 2 hits, scored 1 run, and walked twice. Madison Foss, Emily Wininger, Lexi Davis, and Tehani Yamamoto also had hits in the game.
In game 2, the Royals took on fellow Mon-Dak conference opponent NDSCS. The Wildcats from NDSCS jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after the first 2 innings off of starting pitcher Madison Foss. The Royals were able to cut the deficit by scoring one run in the 3rd inning when Sadie Schilling hit a single bringing in Samantha Shumway. Relief pitcher Lexi Davis came in and slowed the momentum down but the Royals were only able to score one more run in the game. The run came in the 5th inning when Sadie Schilling knocked in Jaelynn Jenkins, who got on by a walk and stole second base. That was all the Royals could score off of NDSCS pitcher Brooke Harder and the game ended by the 8 run rule in the fifth inning. The final score was NDSCS 10, LRSC 2. Overall, Schilling had 2 hits, while Shumway, Tyra Robertson, Tehani Yamamoto, and Emily Wininger each had one. Foss pitched one and a third innings, giving up 8 runs on 6 hits striking out one. Davis pitched 3 and a third innings giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and striking out 5 batters.
In game 3, the Royals were paired against Ellsworth Community College from Iowa. Starting pitcher Emily Wininger gave up one run in the first but 6 runs in the second giving the Panthers from Ellsworth a 7 run lead. The Royals were able to bounce back in the 3rd inning scoring 2 runs after Alysha Moser, who singled, and Lexi Davis, who got on after being hit by the pitch, where knocked in by a single from Samantha Shumway. Tehani Yamamoto came in to pitch in the 3rd relieving Wininger. She gave up 5 runs in the three and two-thirds innings. The other runs scored by the Royals came in the 5th inning after Shumway doubled and Sadie Schilling launched a rocket shot homerun over the center field fence. This cut the lead making the score 9 to 4. Unfortunately, the Royals were unable to hold their opponents who scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th then one more in the 6th with two outs ending the game by the 8 run rule. The final score was Ellsworth 12, Royals 4. Overall, the Royals were lead at the plate by Shumway with 2 hits, one being a double, and Schilling with a homerun. Alysha Moser had the only other hit.
The Royals are currently 3-4 overall with the next scheduled games slated in March when they head to Phoenix AZ for games.
