Facing a tough challenge on the road, the Lake Region State College got a boost from one of its upperclassmen. Sophomore forward Alex Weston led the way with 24 points, including five three-point shots and a perfect 5-for-5 from the line, to help the Royals walk away with an 84-79 victory over the University of Jamestown JV Wednesday afternoon.
"We really road Alex today, he stepped up big when we were struggling to score," third-year LRSC head men's coach Jared Marshall told the Journal.
It was a game of runs and the Royals had just one of two bigger scoring stretches Wednesday. After a back-and-forth first half, the Jimmies, who trailed 36-35 at the half, jumped out to a 10-point lead in the second half.
The final 10 minutes of the second half were huge as LRSC limited Jamestown to just 10 points.
"We slapped on the 1-2-1-1 press late and it was a big reason we turned the game in our favor," Marshall said.
A 25-8 run late in the game gave the Royals an 84-79 victory.
"It was a slow start, but a strong finish," the coach added.
Freshman forward Lamarr Wood finished with 14 points and Nik Fassos added 12.
"Lamarr has continued his development and is playing extremely well," Marshall said. "Nik had a great game and a big-time second half."
Jordan Lynn and Denier Campbell scored seven points each. Cedric Boone netted six points while Kyle Henningsgard added five. Harvey Barr scored four points and Derrick Laudenbach had three. James Streeter rounded off the scoring with two points.
North Star's Jayden Komrosky scored 22 points to lead the Jimmies.
LRSC improved to 12-3 with the win. The Royals travel to face Northeast Community College Friday in Nebraska Friday,
"We are still looking to put a full 40 minutes together, but our best ball is still ahead of us," Marshall said. "I want us to play our best basketball come February and March."
