The Lake Region State College Men's Basketball team hosted the Holiday Inn Classic this past weekend. The Royals came into the weekend with a 2-1 record on the season.
First up for LRSC was Miles City Community College Pioneers out of Montana. The Royals quick start helped them jump out to an 8-point lead. That lead was short lived for the home team as the visiting Miles City team got hot from the field scoring 61 points in the half shooting over 50% from the field. The Pioneers held a 61-47 heading into the half. An early run in the 2nd half by the Royals cut the MCC lead to single digits. A big shooting night from sophomore guard Alex Weston, where he was 6-9 from 3 and scoring 22 points and 7 rebounds on the game helped spark the Royals run. LRSC locked up on the defensive end limiting Miles to only 36 points in the 2nd half. With 3 minutes to go the Royals took their first lead of the 2nd half on a Jordan Bolton 3 pointer and never gave it back. Bolton would finish the night with 23 points and 7 assists. James Streeter had 15 points and 6 rebounds for the game. The final LRSC 102 MCC 97.
Head Coach Jared Marshall said, "It was a gutsy effort by our guys tonight. We certainly didn't have the first half we wanted on the defensive end but came with a purpose in the 2nd. One thing I was particularly proud of was the fact that we only had 8 total turnovers on the game and only one turnover in the second half. That was a big reason we won the game."
Heading into Saturdays game the Royals would be matched up against Northland Community and Technical College out of Minnesota. It was a back and forth half by both teams. Despite an early lead from the Royals, the Pioneers climbed back into it only trailing by 3 at the half. A tough shooting night from the stripe and free throw line hurt LRSC's chances of pulling away. The Royals went 10-21 from the free throw line and 6-27 from 3. Despite Lake Region's offensive problems, they were able to lock up on the defensive end in the second half, holding Northland to 29 points. LRSC was able to get the win 72-62 over NCTC. Cedric Boone led the scoring for the Royals with 28 points and 5 rebounds, sophomore big man Harvey Barr chipped in 9 points and 7 rebounds on the game.
Head Coach Jared Marshall said, "It wasn't a pretty win tonight but I'll take it. I was very happy with our defensive effort. Holding a team in the 60's after giving that up in a half last night was a very good improvement."
The Royals move to 4-1 on the year. They will be back in action on Wednesday night versus Mayville JV, 7pm at the sportscenter. After that you can catch them Saturday night 7pm versus Concordia JV and Sunday 4pm versus Jamestown JV.
