It might not have been the best North Dakota spring for baseball but Mother Nature saved her best for last. The Lake Region State College Royals traveled to Williston, ND for the Region XIII baseball tournament. It was the best weather they had seen all season. Coming into the tournament the Royals had seen the highs and the lows of the year, playing 16 times in 16 days with a 10-19 record (4-12) with an opening round matchup against Dawson Community College 16-13 (4-12). The Royals record on the season was 2-2 against the Buccaneers.
Early on things started going the right way for the Royals, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead. Ezra Johnson had an early RBI and Tarick Morris would give them another with a solo home run shot. Dawson would tie it up in the top of the 4th. They would keep it rolling in the fourth and the fifth adding 4 more runs to take a 6-2 lead.
Trailing 8-3 after the 7th, the Royals would make a late run. LRSC would score three runs in the 8th to make it 8-6. The Royals defense would hold tough despite a couple runners on getting out of the inning. Then it was time for Alex Jinda, he would step up with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and crack a shot over the left field wall to give the Royals life. With the score 8-7, the Royals would not get the final run they needed. They would ground out to end the game.
In the second game of the day, the Royals would take on the Bismarck State College Mystics. This game would be a loser out match up. BSC would take an early 3-1 lead after the 4th inning with Jacob Parsons driving in the lone run for the Royals. The Mystics would add three more in the 5th and four more in the 7th to take the game 10-2 from the Royals. LRSC would never be able to get the bats going throughout the game.
Head Coach Kyal Williams said after the game, "We had our moments today where we played some really great baseball and other times we were not at our best. This time of year in this setting, you always have to bring your best. We came into the tournament with a win over Bismarck State and I thought we were poised to make some noise. We continue to build every year and I am excited to continue that as a program."
