This week both the Royal baseball and softball teams will be departing for warmer climates to get their seasons underway.
Under new Head Coach Kyal Williams the baseball team will be traveling down to Arkansas to play 10 games in 7 days. They will play 3 different opponents during that time, North Arkansas College, Anoka Ramsey CC, and Central Arkansas Club Team. The team made great strides in only it's 2nd season by going 8-28 last year. That was an increase of 7 wins from the previous year and the Royals won a regional tournament game.
The Royals can expect a strong showing from their returning sophomores to help continue the rise of the program. Patrick Becker OF/P, Dakota Hoyt 1B and Ryne Dolleslager C/P will be leaned on heavily to help this young Royals team. "These guys are doing some real work in the cages right now and I expect this will translate onto the field as well," said Coach Williams. Jordan Swanson, Cesar Bernal, Ryan Clark and Jeremy Moran are a few of the younger players to watch. Coach Williams' incoming freshman are a, "...really strong competitive group of athletes that keep pushing each other."
Coach Williams is, "...extremely happy with the boys and how they have welcomed me to the team and taken my advice. It is always hard for them when coaching transitions happen and they have just taken it in their stride and have come out getting better every single day."
The Royals first game will be Sunday March 13th, at North Arkansas College. First pitch will be at 12:30pm.
The Lady Royal softball team is looking to improve on their 3rd place finish in the MonDak and 10-28 finish to the season last year. Head Coach Kory Boehmer has a nice mix of returning and new faces to the team. With two games under their belt and a 1-1 record on the season Coach Boehmer knows, "This will be a challenging test for us." They are going to be playing some stiff competition down in Arizona with many of these teams already having played close to 20 games. The teams they will be playing are 4 NJCAA Division 1 schools and 2 NJCAA Division 2 schools at the Deanna Mauer Memorial Tournament at Central Arizona College on Friday March 11th and 12th. They will also continue their trip with stops in Phoenix and Glendale to take on other NJCAA schools. One of their opponents, Pima Community College, is currently ranked #9 in the Division 2 polls.
Coach Boehmer said, "The most important part will be for us to compete at a high level and sustain the consistency as best that we can."
The Lady Royals will play 13 games in 6 days starting with El Paso CC on Friday March 11th at 11:00 am (MT).
